Introduction

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other intellectual abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. This articles will explain further information about Alzheimer’s disease, the effects if has on a person. And the medications that are available that will help this patients.

Treatments and drugs

   There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. But there is medication available that can help for a time with memory symptoms and cognitive changes. The two medications available for this disease are: Cholinesterase inhibitors and Memantine (Namenda).

Cholinesterase inhibitors

These drugs work by boosting levels of a cell to cell communication chemical depleted in the brain by Alzheimer’s disease.

Memantine (Namenda)

This drug works into another brain cell communication network and slows the progression of symptoms with moderate severe Alzheimer’s disease.

Future treatment breakthroughs

   Researchers are looking for new ways to treat Alzheimer’s. Current medications help mask the symptoms of Alzheimer’s but do not treat the underlying disease or delay its progression. A breakthrough Alzheimer’s drug would treat the underlying disease and stop or delay the cell damage that eventually leads to development and testing, but they need more volunteers to complete clinical trials of those drugs and increased federal funding of research to ensure that fresh ideas continue to fill the pipeline.
